A Walk a Week – Amarante / Serra do Marão

Marão is a group of mountains and high ridges in the north of Portugal (the district of Oporto) offers dramatic stone landscape and little tucked away villages and farm huts, just a delight for trekkers and not only!

Amarante is a small and picturesque town located on the banks of the Tâmega River, crossed by São Gonçalo Bridge (built in 1790), it leads to the impressive São Gonçalo Monastery (built in 1540 and completed in 1620) , named after the local patron saint: protector of marriages.

Inside is a finely gilded Baroque altar and pulpits and São Gonçalo’s tomb. Tradition has it that those in search of a mate will have their wish granted within a year if they touch the statue on the tomb.
