Weekly Photo Challenge: Culture

Alfama, Lisbon’s oldest city quarters is colorfully decorated with paper flags and flowers by the residents for the Catholic “Festival of the Popular Saints” (St. Anthony of Lisbon, St. Peter and St. John) that occurs throughout the month of June, starting with St. Anthony (Lisbon’s Patron) on the night of June 13th.

Thousands of people traditionally flock to the maze street, cramped neighborhood to enjoy a night of get together, grilled sardines, beer, “ginginha” (Morello cherry liquor) and exchanges of “Simpátias para Sto. António” (which are small vases with basil and decorated with a paper carnation and love phrases – St. Anthony is popularly know as the marriage saint) and culminates with a street procession on the afternoon of the 14th.

Beautiful to watch and participate in this cultural event!
