a “soft” spot

Jardim das Pichas, Lisboa, Portugal

At a little corner of Alfama  (Freguesia de S. Vicente, ao Castelo) between the Portas do Sol and Graça Viewpoints there was a meeting place for the neighborhood’s oldest residents. The men used to sit on this small terrace to simply chat, play cards and watch the trams and the world go by. There was no official name for the terrace but younger locals jokingly referred to it as “Jardim das Pichas Murchas”  “the Garden of Limp Dicks”. Everyone came to know it by that vulgar name and after some debate it actually became official as seen on the sign placed above it in 1992. Probably one of the most photographed corners of Lisbon! :)
